If you are looking for a starting point to learn Visual Basic 2005 (VB2005), we  recommend the following books and

 1. Visual Basic 2005 software

To get started, you should install Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition on your machine. Or, you can dowload the more recent version Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition.  What this means for you is that you can use VB2005 books, which get cheaper as more VB2008 books are published.  On the other hand, VB2005 books will not address features that are supported in VB2008, such as LINQ.

Book 1

Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Step by Step

This is a good starting point for new programmers, or programmers who have been away from programming for a while.

The book uses VB2005.

 

Book 2

Programming in Visual Basic.NET 2005 Edition 

This book would be on our  priority list as a textbook for a course on Visual Basic 2005. It is also an excellent resource

for someone with some programming experience. The strong point of this book is that each chapter concludes with a

complete application that covers the material covered in that chapter.

 

Book 3

Starting Out with Visual Basic 2005

This is another good book. The book uses step by step tutorials to guide the students through the development of the

examples in the book. You can checkout the student resources online web pages. They include the code for each of

the chapters, powerPoint preseantations, and other resources.

 

Book 4

Programming Visual Basic 2005

This is also a good good book for learning VB2005. The book take the approach a helping build your applications as

you learn new concepts. In addition, the book covers both Windows applications and Web applications.

 

Book 5

Visual Basic 2005 Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer)

This is a good reference for someone who has written some simple programs in VB2005 and has aquired some  

familiarity  with the integrated development environment (IDE). The book covers some intermediate/advanced

concepts such as namespaces, collection classes, and generics

 

Book 6

Mastering Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 (Mastering)

You will find plenty of practical real world code in this book. It makes a good addition to your VB2005 library.  As you

learn more about VB2005, you realize that any useful program requires a database. This book does a good job in

helping you learn about ADO.NET.

Book 7

Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition Programming for the Absolute Beginner

For one thing, this book is short. It is only 440 pages long and uses a tutorial style format. The format is designed

to help you practice the concetps from the very beginning. If you enjoy developing games, you will find the book fun

to read.
